Animal Core

Core Leader: James Nelson, PhD

The Animal Core maintains and monitors aging colonies of new and established rodent models, determines longevity, and distributes these animals to investigators for basic research on aging. The Core also provides a battery of functional tests for assessing specific functions that anti-aging interventions may influence.

Core services include the following:
  • Breed and characterize new rodent models to provide investigators with resources to study the mechanisms of aging and age-related disease processes
  • Provide investigators with functional measures from cellular to organismic levels
  • Administer drugs, hormones, and other substances in the diet and drinking water of rodents to determine their effects on aging
  • Restrict food intake to assess the effect of food restriction on aging processes
  • Educate and advise faculty and students in animal husbandry related to aging research
