San Antonio Nathan Shock Center for Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging Arlan Richardson, PhD, Director
The San Antonio Nathan Shock Aging Center was established in 1995 at the UTHSCSA as one of the founding Centers instituted by the NIH-National Institute on Aging. The Center provides investigators with state-of-the-art scientific infrastructure, resources, and services used in the development and study of rodent models to address research questions concerning the basic biology of aging.
The Center consists of five Resource Cores:
Transgenic Core,
Animal Core,
Pathology Core,
Oxidative Stress Core, and
Optical Imaging Core, in addition to a
Research Development Core and a
Administrative-Program Enrichment Core.

The Aging Intervention Testing Center studies the effects of anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory compounds added to the diet of specially bred rodents towards lifespan and activity. This NIA-designated center collaborates with others at The University of Michigan and The Jackson Laboratories.
